SOUTH AFRICAN INTERNET DEMOGRAPHICS
07 June 2010

Ever wondered what the average income is of local Internet users? Or maybe what the race breakdown is of local web users? Here are the answers.

It is well known that Internet usage in South Africa is on the increase, and according to recent statistics from the Internet Access in South Africa 2010 study the number of South African Internet users has passed the 5-million mark for the first time.

This research, conducted by World Wide Worx, further shows that the country's Internet user base grew by 15% in 2009, from 4.6-million to 5.3-million, and is expected to grow at a similar rate in 2010.

The recently released Mobile Internet in South Africa 2010 report also points to a market increase on the use of mobile devices to access the Internet. According to the report there are currently around 3.36-million users using their mobile phones for web browsing.

"The use of mobile Internet services has exploded in South Africa, although less than half of urban cellphone users who have Internet-capable phones use the Internet," said World Wide Worx MD Arthur Goldstuck.

While the increase in Internet usage is seen across all sectors of society, not many people know exactly what the local Internet demographics look like. The latest Nielsen Online statistics about local website visitors however sheds light on who visits South African websites.

For the sake of simplicity the latest Nielsen Online demographic statistics for South African websites are provided in table form.
